	| [Nettime-nl] The Classroom with Nina Fischer and Marouan el Sani |

The Professorship for Art and Public Space is proud to present:
The Classroom with
Nina Fischer & Marouan el Sani
19 march 2007, 5 pm, Gerrit Rietveld Academy
The artist Nina Fischer ( Emden, 1965, Germany) and Marouan el Sani
( Duisberg, 1966, Germany) have been working as an artist duo since
1993.
In their work, they make use of different media such as film, video,
photography and installations.
In 2001, Fischer/ El Sani started a series of projects and
installations that focus on the former East German ‘Palast der
Republik’ in Berlin.
The building has been deserted since 1990 and was subject to numerous
political debates concerning its heritage and future function, either
to be broken down or to be kept as a monument for the communist utopia.
While the political debate continued and extensive renovation was
necessary, the building, partially striped down, was left in a state
of ambiguity.
The artists explored this undetermined condition and investigated
the potential usage of the building, displaying the different utopian
dreams
for the same architectural framework, creating parallel meanings. The
architectural construction becomes a point of departure for the
archaeological research on
the collective memory, questioning its psychological relation in
moments of transition.
Fischer / El Sani recently finished their five-month residency at
Virtual Museum Zuidas, producing the work ‘Rise’. It can be seen
during the exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam from
17 march until the 13th of may 2007.
